Oceanside is becoming quite the place for some very good restaurants, some fancy, some casual. Here are just a few. Some of them have been around for a few years, others are quite new.
Ty's Burger House has been around for a while. It's on Mission, and serves burgers, sandwiches and salads. Food is good and fresh. Carmine's is a mostly pizza restaurant on Coast Highway. I have not eaten there, but have it on good authority that they have great THIN pizza. That's what I like. They also serve meatballs and good salads. A fairly new Indonesian restaurant is Dija Mara. I have not been there, and I'm not sure I've ever eaten Indonesian food. The menu lists a number of items I have not heard of, so I would say it is for the adventurous eater. Finally, a very new restaurant on Coast Highway is Exhale. It's the brainchild of the chef and owner of LTH (Local Tap House), one of my favorite restaurants in Oceanside. It's right across the street from LTH, and has beautiful indoor and outdoor space. It's Mexican/Southwest food, and the menu sounds very creative. That will be my next dinner choice in Oceanside.
Things are always changing in the food industry. Restaurants come and go, so I will keep my eyes open for these changes, and let you know.

More North County Restaurant Openings
I'm so excited! I just heard that PrepKitchen is coming to San Marcos. I know that's not so exciting to most of you, but for us in North County, we're always looking for good new restaurants, and more often than not, I'm disappointed. I know PrepKitchen, and it will be a great addition to the area. It is scheduled to open in April at Bloc C at North County. Another one of my favorite restaurants, Hillstone's R and D, will take over the old Bully's in Del Mar. Their opening is a long way off. They have had trouble with the planning commission (I know what that's like in Del Mar), and are planning a huge renovation. For those who haven't been there, you will love it. Moderately priced, delicious food. Look at the menu from their Santa Monica or Fashion Island location to see what's coming. You will love it.
Also in Del Mar, look for Creme and Sugar. They're originally from Orange County, and they serve tea and coffee, and all kinds of bakery items. It's in the Beachside Shopping center. Another hot new area is One Paseo, in Carmel Valley. Coming soon is Shake Shack and Tender Greens. Several other well known restaurants have already signed leases. In UTC, try Sweetfin Poke. I'm a real poke lover, and although I haven't tried Sweetfin yet, I will next time I'm shopping at UTC.
So there's a list of new restaurants to look for and keep you eating out for a while. I almost forgot to mention Bentley's in Encinitas. Bentley's closed several months ago after the owner died, and will become a Mexican restaurant. Nice location and ambience. I hope the food will be as good as the setting. Enjoy it all.

Great Breakfast at The Landings
My dog park group was looking for a nice spot for breakfast recently, and Charlene suggested The Landings at Palomar Airport. What a great find. So sorry it took me so long to discover. Parking was easy, food was great, and surroundings were so much fun. We sat on the patio, all shaded with big umbrellas, talked and watched the planes take off for about 1 1/2 hours. What fun. If there are a lot of planes taking off it might be too noisy, but sitting inside is just fine. The nice thing for us dog park people is, we can bring our pets with us to breakfast.
Palomar Airport is relatively quiet. The only plane that took off while were were there was the new airline (Elite, I think it is), flying to Las Vegas. This would be a fun place to bring young grandchildren. They love watching planes take off and land.
Our food was not what I was expecting from an airport restaurant. Usually, prices are high and food is poor. At The Landings, prices are low and food is delicious. I ordered a breakfast sandwich ($8) on an English muffin, with 2 eggs, cheese and 2 strips of bacon. Others had bacon and eggs, pancakes, hash, and a build your own omelette. Hash browns were good and crispy, just the way I like them. The most expensive item on the menu was $11.
Next time you're looking for a nice breakfast in Carlsbad, reasonable prices and really good food, try The Landings. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Restaurants To Look Forward To
There are so many new restaurants in San Diego, especially North County, coming soon. Lots to get excited about, if you like to eat out, like I do. For the first time since I've lived in Oceanside, there are numerous restaurants opening in Vista and Carlsbad. I'm hoping they'll be good. Here's a run down of just some of the new restaurants coming to the area. Most will be opening in the next few months, several others will open later in 2018. The Shoppes at Carlsbad, the renovated mall that has the Cheesecake Factory as one of its newest tenants, will be home to several new restaurants soon. Also, Vista is becoming not only a brewing hub, but will soon house numerous new eateries. Here's just a sampling of what to look for.
Sammy's Wood Fired Pizza in Carlsbad recently closed for a makeover. It will reopen in a few weeks as Pisco Rotisserie and Cerviche. Sammy Ladeki opened his first Pisco in Libery Station last year, and it has received rave reviews. Now we will have one here in Carlsbad. It's Peruvian food, which is becoming very popular. Can't wait. At Pala Casino, one of the casual dining spots closed, and reopened the next day as Bar Meets Grill. It's California casual, and should be good. Better Buzz, the very popular coffee house with several locations around San Diego, will open a 7,500 square foot retail/office center in Hillcrest. The ground floor will house another Better Buzz cafe. I expect it will be packed from the day it opens. In Encinitas, the building formerly housing The Bird House (Turkish food), will now become Buona Forchetta. This Italian restaurant's other locations are so popular, the owners finally decided to come north. In Vista, Ciao Plaza Restaurant, is in the process of expanding and remodeling. Among other things, they will have a 300 seat banquet room. Also in Vista, look for Dog Haus, a fast casual hot dog chain, opening on Broadway. Raising Cane's will soon open in Vista, as a drive thru restaurant serving chicken fingers. It will be in the old Famous Dave's barbeque, which has been empty for years. Swami's will open it's next location in Vista soon, on Main Street. When Pigs Fly, a terrific barbeque restaurant that has been in a Chevron gas station for years, will reopen on Main St. So many new places in Vista, I'm so excited!
In San Marcos, you will soon be able to visit Rio Churrascaria, a Brazilian Steakhouse, with 20 items on it's buffet. It will be on Grand Ave, where the Elephant Bar used to be. In the newly remodeled Westfield Mall at UTC, you'll find several new restaurants. Great Maple, a chain, will soon open. It's great food, big portions, good service. Javier's a high end traditional and contemporary Mexican restaurant will also open in UTC. Now, for more new restaurants at the Shoppes in Carlsbad: Lucha Librea Taco Shop, Texas De Brazil (all you can eat grilled and roasted meats served tableside), and Wokano, an LA based chain serving Asian fusion, will soon open.
It looks I will no longer be able to say "There's no place to eat in Oceanside and Vista." What a vast assortment of new places to choose from. I will never get to all of these new places, but when I do find one I like, I will definitely review it. Happy eating.

More New Restaurants in San Diego
I can't keep up with all the comings and goings in San Diego, but it's not for a lack of trying. I"ve got some new places for you to think about and hopefully try. Here goes.
Himalayan Kitchen in Encinitas, in the Sprouts shopping center, sounds very interesting. I'm not sure how long it's been there, but I just recently noticed it, and hope to try it soon. It serves food from Bengladesh, India and Nepal. I have heard is delicious.
508 Tavern opened recently in Vista. It's got lots of craft beer for those that love beer, and a pretty good food menu to go with it. Their most popular item is Korean tacos, but they have many other delicious sounding appetizers, small plates and entrees that will entice you. Another tavern in North County.
Craft Burger has been open for a while, and I'm embarrassed to say I haven't been there. It is owned by a friend of Ron's, Alex Morrison. Alex owned a fine dining restaurant prior to Craft Burger, but the Carlsbad crowd was more into casual dining, so he opened Craft Burger. It's in old Carlsbad, and from those I know who have eaten there, delicious. 1/2 pound burgers with just about anything you want on them: avocado, blue cheese, onions, barbeque sauce. They also make in house frozen custard, which is reason enough for me to try it. If I'd know that earlier, I would have already eaten there, but I will try it soon.
Oscars has recently opened in Encinitas, at the corner of Coast Highway and Encinitas Blvd. (Leucadia Pizza center). It replaces another Mexican restaurant. I know nothing about it, except I have heard from several people that the food is good. I think they have several other locations.
I also want to mention that Lazy Acres in Encinitas has a wonderful take out section. My favorite station is the make your own poke bowl station. They have all the ingredients displayed, and all you do is tell the server what you want in your bowl. If you like poke, try it. They sell it by the pound, so it can get expensive, but very good.
That's all for now. Keep me updated if you have anything new to tell me about. I'd love to hear from those of you that live in other parts of San Diego. I can't get to everything, so you need to help by letting me know of new places I should check out. Thanks.
